So you’re on your own now and you’re finally able to make your new space your own. Only to look over to your bank account and see what looks like spare change.
Many people forgo decorating their dorm rooms or their first apartment because it’s temporary, they don’t want to spend a lot of money on it, or they just don’t think they can.
Don’t fall for any of those traps. Even just picking a couple inexpensive items that look expensive can really turn your blank box into a cozy and inviting home.

Floating Shelves
If you are able to mount floating shelves to your walls, DO IT. We have some in the bathroom and it has completely changed the vibe in there for the better.
Shelves are the best way to give yourself the space to add personality to a room. Fill it with the best shot you took on your last vacation, some pomp grass, and a decorative piece or antique.
Area Rug
An area rug instantly makes your apartment or dorm room look like children are not the sole inhabiters of the place. I have gotten so many positive comments on the area rug in our living room because it truly makes the space feel complete.
Area rugs look great in the living room, under the kitchen table, peaking out from under the foot of the bed, or even between the bunks in a dorm room. You can find decent rugs that are inexpensive. I got mine at Home Goods and I love it! It looks similar to this one you can buy on Amazon:
Vases
These vases are super cute and modern. And TBH I want them!!
Vases are perfect additions for just about anywhere. You can add these to your bathroom, coffee table, dinning table, bookshelf… you name it.
Aesthetic Cooking Utensils
Having some wooden utensils in a white jar sitting on your counter just ties it all together. Not only are these utensils super useful, but they’re also aesthetic AF.
I own these exact ones and I use them all the time! They are an amazing deal for the quality.
DIY Anything with Rub & Buff
If you enjoy thrift and saving money, this is the best tip for you. Don’t even bother spending top dollar on frames, candle stick holders, vases… you name it.
You can literally transform anything with this stuff and you’ll save so much money. I transformed 2 bedside table lamps and didn’t even use a quarter of the tube. A little goes a long way!
I have no idea how, who, or why this product was created, but holy sh*t it is AMAZING. I truly cannot rave about this stuff enough.
Throw Blanket
Having a blanket thrown over the end of your bed or draped over your chair is a simple yet effective way to soften up the room. Plus, it’s the perfect opportunity to add texture to your plain couch, add a pop of pattern, or bring out your favorite color in the room that’s going unappreciated.
I get cold so easily, and I always notice (and appreciate!) when blankets are of easy access when I am a guest. So that’s another reason it’s super important to have a blanket out and about.
Clear Jars Toiletries
Either these are going to make your life easier in your bathroom, or they will make your guests feel at home in the guest bathroom. I bought these cute jars to put in our guest bathroom, and they really make it feel inviting.
I want my guests to feel at home by having access to anything they might feel weird asking for. And honestly, I think I might switch out the cotton balls for mints instead. I use a lot of garlic in my cooking so they might appreciate those more. 😉
Glass Soap Pump
Ditch your Dial soap pump and go for something that’s actually cute. I have this soap pump and I love it!
Honestly, I can’t remember if it came with the little wooden tag. But, we all know it’s soap so can we break this trend?
Modern Tray
Adding a tray to your coffee table or ottoman screams “I have my life together”… even if you don’t. No one does, but a tray certainly helps.
Decorate your modern tray with candles, candies, aesthetic poetry boots, or even some fresh flowers to boost the warmth of your space,
Make your own throw pillows
Having throw pillows on your couch, bed, or bunk is one of the easiest ways to quickly elevate your room from bland to cozy and welcoming. Here are some inexpensive inserts that you can use to decorate with once and for all, or change them up with the seasons!
Buying inserts and covers to go over them is the most cost effective way to buy throw pillows in most cases. I have these exact pillows and they are great for the price.
Bonus Holiday Ideas
Personally, decorating for the holiday’s is my favorite! Wanted to make sure you saw these throw pillow covers that I bought that I absolutely LOVE.
Everyone know that using the pillows that come with your couch is an aesthetic no-no. Buuuut, I kind of disagree.
I mean, if I get something for free (AKA “included” with the couch I PAID for), I’m going to use them. However, that doesn’t mean they have to look like bricks on the end of your couch.
This Christmas I bough 2 different pillow covers to bring color and texture to our Christmasy living room. And I actually love them. Fully recommend!
These red velvet pillow covers are super soft and cozy!
I also bought these orange ones for the fall season. The quality of these are great!
